The giant hawk soared over the mountains, clearly enjoying its freedom after so many months of being controlled by the skull spider. But as it flew over the area where the foothills bordered the Region of Jungle, the hawk saw two figures walking on the ground, and felt a stab of fear. One figure was a masked humanoid with large horns jutting from his head, and the hawk recognized him as Skull Grinder. The other figure was a skull spider.

Kulta and the skull spider stopped walking and looked up at the hawk, who was already banking away across the sky, heading off fast in the opposite direction. “Curses!” Kulta said. “Those meddling Toa must have knocked the spider off the hawk’s head. It took me months to train that spider to fly the hawk properly, and to capture trespassers in the ravine.”

Kulta glanced down at the skull spider beside him. The spider’s evil eyes flicked up to return Kulta’s gaze. Kulta said, “How fast can you learn how to fly a hawk?”

The mindless spider wobbled back and forth on its legs. Kulta was in such a foul mood that he was tempted to kick the spider, but he held his temper and said, “Ekimu and the Toa must have found the cave by now, and discovered the Skull Raiders. The sooner we get there, the sooner I’ll exact my revenge!”

Kulta descended into the ravine. The skull spider skittered along after him.
