CHAPTER 19

INTREPID EXPLORER’S

The next day Carob walked towards his new work place located in the town centre whistling nervously. He dressed in clothes from the closet in the blue room, leaving the tickets on.

Arianna didn’t have to start work at the hospital for a few days, so Caramel and Arianna decided to go exploring to get the general layout of Silkwood. Arianna grabbed some of the money from the table and she stuffed it into her pocket, walking back into the blue room to look in the wardrobes. There were racks and racks of brand new clothes and her eyes welled up with tears as she realised that it was inevitable; one day they would have stumbled on the secret of the caramel cardamom syrup and the Alexanders were more than prepared for it. She slipped on a shirt and some shorts, pulling off a ticket from a store called ‘Country Lane’, thinking to herself miserably, Well you got that right.

She wiped her eyes and wandered back into the kitchen to an eagerly waiting Caramel. Arianna eyed her daughter with a puzzled look.

Caramel still wore her cargo pants and singlet top and her flip flops, looking somewhat dirty and disheveled. She knew exactly what her mother was thinking without even reading her thoughts.

‘I am not changing,’ she said with her cheeks ablaze. Arianna held out her hand.

‘Well at least you are dressed for the weather.’

They jumped into the car parked in the garage. Arianna pushed the button to start it and she began looking perplexed.

‘It’s not an automatic…You have to drive it manually.’

‘Like actually watching the road you mean Mum?

‘Yes I think so darling ... It was before your time, but that’s how all the cars used to be driven on Cardamom, before they became automated, however, it’s been a very long time since I’ve driven one!’

They both sat nervously in the car.

‘I know,’ said Caramel. ‘How about we walk around the town and I can try out my new scooter, just until you’ve had a little time to figure out how to drive again.’

Arianna, laughed like a canary trilling a tune.

‘I think you are right honey, we don’t want to be too conspicuous by driving on the wrong side of the road our first day on a new planet.’ Caramel jumped out of the car and grabbed her new scooter from the garage.

‘I bet this baby can fly, it looks pretty slick Mum.’

‘That’s what I love about you darling, no matter how bad it seems to get, you can always find the good in things.’ She followed Caramel down the driveway looking defeated.

Caramel wobbled awkwardly but she didn’t seem to care, too busy taking in the sights of Silkwood. Their house was situated between two fields with thick green stalks planted in perfectly straight rows and a steep driveway winding right down the middle. After a few minutes she reached the road which appeared to be coated in some kind of black substance. She peered at it wondering if it was safe to travel on.
