Kirk smiled at Stan. “Did you send Phillips’s prints and blood to

the FBI?”

“Ran the prints through IAFIS; no matches. I passed the

collaboration question to the brass.” Stan shot Kirk an innocent look.

“I’m still waiting for an answer.”

For the first time that evening, Kirk glanced at his watch. “It’s

getting late. You ready to go?”

“You bet.”

Kirk signaled the waiter and said, “Je voudrais l’addition, s’il

vous plait. ” Stan slid his Visa card to the edge of the table. Kirk picked

it up and slipped it into Stan’s shirt pocket. Le garçon returned with the

bill and scanned Kirk’s AmEx Centurion card at the table. The valet

had the SUV rolling to the curb as Kirk and Stan stepped into the

spring night under a full moon. Kirk tipped the valet and slid behind the

wheel.

Kirk parked in Stan’s driveway and killed the engine. “Do you

want me to say goodnight here?”

“Hell no.” Stan gave Kirk a quick kiss. Kirk pulled the keys and

opened the driver’s side door.

Stan poured two glasses of red wine in his kitchen, handed one to

Kirk, and led him to the living room. They sat side by side on the

sectional sofa. A large black, red, and white Persian cat appeared and

sat on her haunches, staring imperiously at Kirk. The calico leaped onto

Kirk’s lap, curled up, and purred. Kirk scratched behind her ears and

told Stan, “What a beautiful cat. If you weren’t gay, you should be.”

“Aaron gave me full custody of Ellie when he split. His new BF

is allergic to cats.” Stan set his wine glass on the coffee table. “I

enjoyed dinner and just being with you. Ya didn’t need to go balls

out—we could’ve gone to a greasy fuckin’ spoon.”

Kirk sipped some wine. “Our first date required a memorable

meal.” He rubbed a finger under Ellie’s chin and over her throat. The

big cat’s purr intensified.
