A variety of different lines of evidence led the panel to conclude that Das was the major culprit for these falsifications. In a rambling seven-page letter in response to the draft report, Das complained that the initial complaint was made by someone with a grudge against him and who had access to his computer. He accused some senior U of C staff of having a specific prejudice against Indian scientists and that the stress of dealing with the accusations had made him seriously ill. He launched a $35 million lawsuit against the university for defamation but died in September 2013 before the case was resolved.

Resveratrol has been an active area of research, generating in excess of 1,000 papers annually in some recent years. Some of those active in resveratrol research claimed that, despite his large number of publications, Das had not been a major figure in resveratrol research; one claimed to have had to look up who he was of him despite citing his work and even serving on a committee with him. Das published a high proportion of those papers that dealt specifically with the claimed cardiovascular benefits of resveratrol. Whilst his papers were not citation classics many achieved more than respectable citation rates.

Bill Sardi, a spokesman for a company producing a resveratrol product, vigorously defended Das and wrote in an obituary that Das was a major contributor to medical knowledge and that he had been vindicated over allegations of research fraud; a vindication that I have not yet found. In his defence of Das, soon after the allegations were made public, he said that:

The alleged faulty tests did not materially affect the conclusions about resveratrol
