The primary task for the students at school is formal learning, although they are also involved in playing, socializing, and self-caring tasks. Children spend a large proportion of their time at school not only in classroom environments, but also in indoor and outdoor playground environments, and in specialist areas such as library, music room, and science laboratory. The furniture and equipment in classrooms typically include desks and chairs; in playgrounds, they typically include seating and play equipment; and children usually transport school-related materials in schoolbags. Information technology (IT) is an important element in schools, ranging from traditional paper-based reading and writing through blackboards/whiteboards to electronic-based desktop, laptop, and tablet computers and smart boards. There is also a growing awareness of the importance of the neighborhood to the school system. For example, the walkability of the surrounds impacts the proportion of children walking or cycling to school and thus the overall physical activity levels of children.

A number of health concerns have been raised for children in schools, including musculoskeletal disorders such as neck, back, or upper limb discomfort or pain related to awkward or sustained postures and repetitive motions, vision problems related to prolonged close vision work and computer use, mental health problems related to social interactions and mood, and sedentary behavior–related issues such as obesity and diabetes from sustained sedentariness and a lack of activity. The productivity for students relates to effective learning, with a large body of research exploring the methods to improve learning.
