The Cemetery (second phase)

He then asked to visit the cemetery again in our session, where he released his sadness for not being there when his paternal grandparents had passed away. With support, he expressed his appreciation for all they had done for him – a moving thank you – leading him to say goodbye. This brought a special closure to him and an opportunity to move forwards in his life. We had also visited where they used to live, and the happy memories that this brought him, including where his grandfather kept his hats. This brought a further integration of his past life and the key attachment figures that impacted him. I felt this gave him a strong sense of identity with his father’s side of the family, through powerful environmental life connections.

This was a real step forward for Jack, and led to his next phase of expression at the family pub of feeling very worried for his mother and her welfare, and that he should be caring for her. He was now able to understand his behaviour much more quickly, explaining that he had self-harmed again because he was not happy with himself. I encouraged him to give consideration to his mother being an adult, even though it was very natural to be concerned, and that she could seek help from other people if she needed to. He was very relieved after hearing this.
