Opportunists like to fly by the seat of their pants and don’t like to be fettered in any way. As a result, very little time and focus goes into mapping out a strategic plan for business and following it diligently. After all, a great new opportunity could pop up first thing tomorrow morning, right?

When I study the highly successful Opportunist DNA entrepreneurs out there, one of the defining differences between them and their counterparts is their strategic plan. They actually have one. Sir Richard Branson is a great example of an individual with Opportunist DNA who has a vision and mission that has allowed him to become one of the most successful entrepreneurs in the world. Do you have a strategic plan like his?

A strategic plan is simply an action plan that comes out of knowing one’s vision (where you want to go in life) and one’s mission (how you are going to get there). Discovering one’s vision and mission is not a 10-minute hand-scribbled “back of a paper napkin” exercise. It takes introspection and process. I have included a complete strategic planning process in Chapter 13 of this book. I recommend that you begin the process and discipline of discovering your vision by mapping out your 36-month mission. Not only will it keep you from getting distracted, it will give you a significant feeling of focus and accomplishment along the way.
