Chapter 13

When Parker whisked her away to a hidden destination, Kennedi wasn’t sure what to think. Especially when he’d told her to wear clothes she wouldn’t mind getting dirty. And now, sitting on the Grand River in a motorboat with him, fishing pole in hand, she knew what he meant.

To prepare for the fishing excursion, he’d taken her to get a fishing license, which is required in Michigan for anyone over the age of seventeen. Then they’d gone to buy a fishing pole. He’d taught her all about fishing lines, hooks, fishing lures, and the different types of bait. Parker had purchased live bait and plugs. The plugs looked like little fish, and Kennedi had thought it better to use those than the red earthworms he’d purchased.

It had taken about an hour to get everything they needed. Then they had loaded everything on his boat and he had driven them out to his favorite spot on the river. The trees were turning, so the view on the river was gorgeous. Kennedi had taken in the sights and smells and felt at peace.

For someone who’d never gone fishing, never even thought she’d like to fish, Kennedi was pleasantly surprised that she’d caught on to the process of getting her spinning reel ready so quickly. Casting the line was another story. It had taken several tries for her to cast her reel, and Kennedi had been tempted to just throw the damn thing in the river. Parker had been patient, holding her hand in place and guiding her motion. Finally, her line was cast and she’d taken a seat to wait.

“I cannot believe I’m out here fishing like this,” Kennedi said.

Parker glanced at her out of the corner of his eye. “It’s nice, huh?”

“It’s . . . different. But I can see why you like to do it.”

“Me and my grandfather used to sit out on the river for hours. It didn’t matter if we caught a fish or not. It was quality time, the unknown, and just being on the water made the trip for me.”

Kennedi watched Parker for a minute. It was obvious he loved being outside. He was dressed casually, in old jeans and a T-shirt. He wore a Detroit Tigers baseball cap. His muscular arms were loose, but she could tell he was still alert, watching for any sign that they’d caught something.

“How often do you come out here?”

“Any chance I get,” he said honestly. “It’s been a little harder since taking over Wellspring Corp., but I’ve been able to carve out time here and there. It’s stress relief.”

“Did you always know you wanted to take over the company?”

It took Parker so long to respond, Kennedi had wondered if he’d even heard the question. “No. When I was growing up, I wanted to do anything that was opposite of what Senior wanted.”

Kennedi wasn’t surprised. Over the past week, Parker had made it very clear that he was nothing like his father. “But you ended up there?”

“Once I realized that I could effect change, once I realized that Senior wouldn’t be around forever.
