Jaxon grabs my wrist just as I’m reaching for the door handle. “Tatum, I owe you an explanation.”

I look at him over my shoulder, and a lump forms in my throat at the hesitant look on his face. “It’s okay, Jax. I don’t need you to tell me you don’t feel the same way. You’ve made that pretty clear from the get-go.” The lock clicks as I turn the door handle. “I’ll be okay. Let’s just get through today. Then we can find a way for Zeke to sneak that potion in, and I’ll kill my dragon.”

I don’t give him a chance to respond and duck into the hallway before the first word leaves his lips. It’s not that I’m not dying to hear an explanation for his silence over the past nine days, but more that I don’t want to enter a courtroom with a blood-stained collar and tears streaming down my cheeks.

Sensing my urgency to escape the dragon in the bathroom, Zeke rushes to guide me toward the large double doors. Behind those doors, my destiny awaits. The director of the board, Tarron Devaux, will either grant me freedom or sentence me to a longer stint at The Compound.

Since I don’t see Gray, Aspen, or Yegan in the sitting area, I assume they’ve gone on ahead to take their seats in the witness box. So when Jaxon approaches the door and Zeke waves him inside, we’re essentially alone.

Except for the other prisoners and their guards, of course.

“Before we head in,” Zeke starts. He looks at the floor and slides his boot over an invisible mark on the carpet. “You should know that Jaxon isn’t aware of your time in the Kill Cavities. The ABBS kept it from him to avoid conflict.”

“And you, Zeke? Why did you keep it from him?”

He looks up, ashamed. “I believe the prison would not be standing if he knew. It was in everyone’s best interest to keep him in the dark.”

I can’t help but sigh. “You’re right. But he’s going to be furious.”

With a pinched face — no doubt he’s imagining the world of pain he’s about to be in — Zeke opens the door and escorts me into the courtroom.

The room itself is simple. Wood-panelled walls make the area seem smaller than it is, offering a false sense of comfort. But when I turn and look up to see the family and friends of the accused sitting in neat rows along a small but long balcony, a stone settles in my stomach. My parents are front and centre, right in front of Seth.

Mum offers a small wave while Dad gives the thumbs up. I try to smile, but end up just baring my teeth, so I turn and follow Zeke to my seat. My seat is at the table that is reserved for the accused and their lawyer. In this case, the lawyer is Shaw and I’m the accused.

On the other side of the aisle, Davenport and her lawyer, who looks a nervous wreck, stand behind their seats.
