Shall/should/ought to

The modal verbs “shall”, “should” and “ought to” are verbs that we use when we are being polite.

We use “shall” for offering assistance or for suggesting something, especially when we think that the answer may be positive. However, we use this modal verb only with “I” and “we”. For example:

Shall I help you find your running shoes?

Shall we run?

We can use “should” in a similar way to “shall”, to offer assistance or to suggest something. For example:

Should I give you some water?

Should we go running in the morning?
