7.2.1 Task Identification Plans

One of the important elements of project planning is to divide the project SOW into individual tasks to be performed by members of the project team. These tasks will be plotted or listed in PERT or Gantt charts to show the layout of the project and the precedence of each task. It is important to strike a balance so that the tasks are not too small (accounting for less than one day of engineering work) or too large (multidisciplinary tasks accounting for weeks at a time). Too many tasks will lead to complex charts and relationships, and therefore the overhead for managing the information on the PERT or Gantt charts will be exceedingly high. It will also require many adjustments if the project is late. If the tasks are too large, then the effectiveness of the PERT and Gantt charts will be reduced, since they do not show problems in the execution of large tasks. It is important to keep the number of tasks at a reasonable size, depending on the number of milestones and skill sets required for the project.

Each task should have a special document to identify the purpose, a brief description, the team members assigned, the task activities, and input and output of each task. A typical task definition example is given in Table 7.2.
