12.3.1 Mathematical Analysis of Side Looking Synthetic Aperture Radar

Suppose that an aircraft carrying a probe antenna flies over land to make a map. In order to make an accurate map, resolution is required in the direction of the flight path (azimuth) as well as in the direction perpendicular to it (ground range). The power of resolution of the side looking synthetic aperture radar is obtained by the pulse method in the ground range direction and by the synthetic aperture antenna in the azimuthal direction.

For simplicity, only one target, located at (x0, y0) in the coordinate system in Fig. 12.20, is considered. Let the distance from the aircraft to the target be r, and let the wave transmitted from the aircraft be represented as
