XVI

The sword passed through Hel's calf.

“No!” the monster screamed. She toppled over and landed so hard that chunks of decomposed flesh fell from her left shoulder, revealing stark bone to worm-filled socket.

“I am Hel! Queen of Nifteheim! Ruler of the Underworld!”

Now Hel began to fight. She was on her side, but it was the dead side uppermost. Invulnerable. The loose dead hand had released a stil -quivering David and rejoined the arm. Hel swung her dead fist at April. April swung the sword, sliced through the dead arm like chopping at a cloud. The fist stayed put and knocked April rolling across the floor. She rolled toward the pit I lumped up, ran. Grabbed April's hair, the only thing I could reach, slipped, but held on.

April stopped. I fell over her, slid past, and realized that my face was now suspended over the void.

I looked down into the pit. Horror!

It was a shaft, lit by fire. The living and the dead hung like sides of beef, disfigured, flayed, to chains, down as far as the eye could see. They were arrayed to a spiral between endless ascending coils of a snake so huge it formed a sort of walkway.

The head of the snake was out of sight, far away to the darkness below. But I knew this snake. Even to Everworld there could only be one Midgard Serpent.

But above this monstrous vision hung a single person, suspended by threads so that they might have been spiderwebs.

Senna hung helpless above Hel's own hell.
