If you’re an adult and you’ve realized your parent’s harmful and destructive methods, then it’s important that you individualize and establish yourself as your own person. This is because many narcissistic parent’s suggestions and instructions for you will be self-serving – that is, they will benefit the parent and not you.

To them, being in control is far more rewarding and satisfying than seeing their children bloom and develop to be their own individual self. In fact, a narcissistic parent might even feel threatened to see you slowly becoming independent of their guidance.
