There are now a bewildering variety of energy and water monitors and controls on the market, with software and systems that can give instantaneous readings of usage, demand charges and other penalties, operating metrics for parameters which are out of bounds, temperature, air flow, and many other measurements. Where only general information is needed, they are installed at the service entrances or on main connection boxes; for specific operating details on manufacturing processes or pumps, they are installed at the load. Communications can be wired, wireless, and even in mesh wireless systems which communicate through whichever operational nodes are closest. Systems can provide monitoring functions only, or they can control systems until they are out of bounds and then alarm the operator. They can be purchased and installed/managed in-house and use cloud-based services, or the hardware and software can be rented or leased. Most electrical sensors can be installed without rewiring, and most gas and water monitors can be installed on the outside of the pipes.

Finally, utilities are becoming visible, trackable, measurable, and predictable. Everything can be tracked.

For illustrative purposes, some examples of the types of output available from a few different systems are shown below. Before choosing a system, managers will want to conduct the internal analyses detailed in the next section so that they can appropriately specify their needs.
