Richard had relieved all the guards and deputies except for himself, Cady, and Frederick. The office door was locked and they all sat at a table in the hall playing cards. Inside, Charlie and Rebecca were actually using one of the desks as a makeshift supper table. It was much better than the tiny table in his cell. The desk was covered in food, more food than the two of them together could eat in a week, but it was their last night and their last meal together, and Rex and Sarah had made sure to provide a bit of everything.
âRichard is willing to let me stay the night if you like,â Rebecca said quietly as she sipped her brandy.
He smiled. âI would like that very much, butâ¦â
âNo buts.â She covered his hand with hers. âI want to be here.â
He nodded knowing exactly what she meant. He wanted her there too, but the thought of their last night together being spent in a jail cell made him sick in the pit of his stomach. âHave you decided what you and the children will do?â
Rebecca just shook her head. There was no way she could even consider going on without him while he was still sitting in front of her. âI cannot, Charlie. Not right now, please do not ask me to.â Tears welled in her eyes.
âAll right, love.â He nodded, not wanting to push her limits any further than necessary.
In the three days they had to wait for the gallows to be built, they had cried until there were absolutely no more tears from either of them. They had talked about a bit of everything, neatly avoiding the obvious. They were both quite numb with shock and disbelief.
Now the obvious was creeping up on them. At 10:00 in the morning, Charlie would be taken from the jail and made to walk the gallows steps.
âI do not want you there,â he finally said as he sipped his brandy.
âOf course I am going to be there. I want them to have to look at me. I want them all to see what they have done.â
âRebeccaâ¦â
âNo! Damn it, Charlie! Our marriage vows said until death do us part and I intend to be there with you. To the very end.â She reached out and took his hand. âI also intend that we are going to go over there and make love tonight.â
She tugged him to his feet and led him to what would be their last bed. With painful slowness she undressed him, touching every spot on his body with such intensity he realized she was trying to memorize it. He began the same excruciatingly slow process with her.
