For purposes of this discussion, we are going to discuss the work of Carl Jung. His most brilliant act was to break down all of human psychology into archetypes. An archetype is defined as a prototype or model from which all other things are made. In human psychology, this means that our personalities can be broken down into basic stereotypical patterns that lurk beneath the surface of our social intercourse. These original prototypes existing within our psyche can be most easily viewed through mythological representations of the various gods. A quick study of the various pantheons will reveal heroes, thieves, betrayers, lovers, healers, poets and just about any basic function of the human psyche. To a Jungian psychologist, the gods are merely the irreducible expression of how life functions. Our individual personalities are a combination of the various aspects. By sorting out the negative archetypes from the positive ones, we can get a better idea of who we are. By then tracing back the various behavior patterns as to why we assumed a negative archetype, we can clear ourselves of it and get along better in life.
