NINE

BRING IT ON, BRANDI

We examined the walls for hours, but the barn was a solid structure. The materials and the workmanship of the old building were of a quality you just didn’t find in modern construction. The planks were thick and true. The nails, giant sticks of steel. Every angle was built exactly right. When this barn was raised, it was meant to last forever. The building standards would be impressive if they weren’t the obstacle holding us back from our freedom. Neither Ethan nor I could find any exploitable flaws and the space was growing darker and darker by the minute.

Night had fallen. It had been hours since either of us had eaten anything. Our stomachs were rumbling. And our cage had turned black. We struggled to see in the growing shadows. The cool autumn night set into our bones.

“We have to be ready,” Ethan told me. “When they come back for us. They don’t know we’re out of our cells and we can use that to our advantage.”

“It has to have been six or seven hours,” I judged, based on the deepening shadows on the walls.

“At least.” Ethan agreed. “So when they come with dinner, bam! We pounce.”

“I could create a net.”

“Yeah. Oh, that would be perfect. The door swings open and splat.” He mimed an imaginary net springing on their surprised faces. “That’s just what we need… and maybe some burgers? While we wait…?” He peeked at me. “Could you razzle dazzle up some grub?”

As if on cue, my stomach rumbled, the gastric juices crying out for a feast. I shook my head. “It wouldn’t work.” I was just as hungry as he was.

Our bodies had recovered from their initial shock of imprisonment hours ago. All we had now were dry throats, the dull ache of hunger in the pits of our stomach and the nagging impression that we’d cry with excitement at the sight of an opening door.

“You have to be fooled,” I said. “And you can’t be. You already know. We both know. There’s no food in this prison. We’ve been over every inch.”

“Have we?”

“Yes.”

Ethan’s face took on a playful smile. “Maybe we missed a bit.” He winked.

“What do you…? Oh.” I picked up on what he was getting at. “Oh?”

“I haven’t looked in the back of the barn.” He shrugged. “Who knows what’s there? Could be anything…”

“That’s so weird.” I played along. “I haven’t been back there either. Perhaps we should check…”

A hamburger would be so delicious right about now. Or a meatball. Maybe a salad. Literally anything.

“Who knows what we’ll find?”

He pulled me to my feet and together, we walked to the back room. My mouth salivated at the thought of being able to conjure food on demand. A piping hot pizza from a wood stove oven, the cheese still oozing over the sauce… a perfectly proportioned peanut butter and jelly sandwich, bread so soft your teeth would sink as you bit your way in...

“Could be a burger and fries, still steaming hot from the fryer,” Ethan’s mouth also watered.
