Ridgeford hummed with activity when Alora arrived on the main road. A long stretch of dirt lined with shops of every kind. She smiled; no matter where one traveled in N’dorya, there was a road like this in every city. They were the arteries of the cities and the people who lived here were the hearts beating life into their realm.

The scent of hot meals coiled around Alora’s nose and her stomach rumbled in response. Her first order of business would be to find an inn or tavern and have breakfast. She glanced up at the sun, lunch, her first order of business would be lunch.

After she filled her belly, Alora headed down the street. Her eye caught on the silk and satin fabrics dressing a few shop windows. When they won this war, she would commission many new dresses. Bodhi had shredded more than a few of her favorites.

She paused outside one shop, krunerolas and other pastries oozing chocolate lined the window. The temptation to lick the glass surged. A breeze tousled her hair, which remained tied in a loose ponytail, and the braid with Bodhi’s feather rested against the column of her neck.

“Would you like one?” The scent of chili and chocolate filled her nose and made her thighs clench together.

“Have you ever known me to say no?” She could not keep the smile from her lips, though she dared not turn to face him.

Bodhi laughed behind her. “Yes, many times, but never to chocolate.” Heat simmered from him onto her back. “Are you alright?” he whispered close to her ear.

Alora tugged the sleeve of her jacket down, wishing it covered the top of her hand, where the design peeked out.

“Why wouldn’t I be?” She turned her head.

“Because, yesterday around this time, I nearly vomited from pain in my ribs and arm. Sour milk churned my gut and my head spun.”

“It sounds like I should be asking you if you’re alright. Newlywed nerves, perhaps?” Alora sucked in a breath and turned to face Bodhi. His silver wings flared out behind him, already metal despite no present danger. The sunlight caught on his ink-black hair and she wanted to run her fingers through it. Would it feel like it did in her memory?

He chuckled. “I’m fine.” His eyes lingered on her bandaged arm. “What happened?”

“Doerty shot me. Once in the ribs and then my arm.” Alora tasted the bitterness coating her tongue and knew it wasn’t from her.

“Did you kill her?”

“No. One of Lightfoot’s trolls hit her in the head and brought me to safety.” Alora reached up, tucking a strand of his hair back from his eyes.

Bodhi reached for her braid. He smiled as he turned it over in his hand. “Want to help me kill her?”

“I can take care of my own dirty work.”

Bodhi wrapped his arms around her, squeezing her to his chest, without crushing her damaged arm. “I know you can, but I want to watch you tear her throat out. And this time, no one is going to stop me from fucking you on the desk.
