Example 4.1: The triangle wave of Figure 4.4 has an AC component that goes between +4 V and −4 V. Its RMS value is therefore 0.577 × 4 = 2.31 V. It has a DC component of 5 V, so the true RMS value is:

Example 4.2: A signal consists of a high frequency sine wave of 5 V pk for 400 ms with no DC, followed by a DC voltage of 2 V for 300 ms. What is the RMS value?

RMS value of the sine wave is 5 × 0.707 = 3.54V
