Reference works: Two case studies

It is clearly impossible to describe or even list all the dictionaries or encyclopedias that are available on CD-ROM. The easiest way to get an overview of reference works in a field is to conduct an Internet search, starting with a search in a virtual bookstore. In the following, two CD-ROMs, the Oxford English Dictionary and the French Bibliorom, are presented to give an idea of the general set-up of multimedia reference works.

The Oxford English Dictionary

The CD-ROM version of the Oxford English Dictionary (OED) holds the contents of the 20-volume print edition of one of the world’s most prestigious dictionaries. It provides definitions of more than half a million words, and through almost two and a half million quotations it offers a wealth of information on the diachronic and synchronic usage of the terms it features.

The CD-ROM version offers a variety of search options, the most basic being the word search. Simply enter the word(s) you are looking for in the search box and press the Enter key. All entries matching the search term(s) will be listed. If you click on the list entry you are interested in, the complete article will be displayed (Figure 39).
