The sensation of gravity suddenly yanking me down was petrifying. I felt my body lock up, and I instantly imagined myself hitting the ground hard, and then that being it. The lights would go out. I’d be dead.

Somehow, that didn’t happen. I was only falling for a couple of seconds, maybe only a foot through the air, when I fell on something hard and solid. I looked up and saw that the ground was still shaking, but I wasn’t on it. There was a large, translucent ball of light surrounding me. That’s what I was sitting on.

Oz was still on the cliffside. Apparently, only the ground beneath me had fallen. He had his arms outstretched in my direction, directly on the other side of the ball of light. I could see that he was focusing hard on something. Was he doing this? Putting up a force field or something?

I lost that trail of thought when I heard a large crashing sound. When I looked back up at the towers of the castle, I could see the hole from the explosion on the first day of class. They’d been rebuilding it, but they hadn’t completed the work yet. As the earthquake shook the ground, the open hole in the side of the building started to crumble. The ceiling above the tower caved in. Most of it stayed on top of the tower, but some of the bricks fell somewhere past the wall. I thought I could hear screaming in the distance, but my blood was pounding so hard in my ears, and it was hard to really discern anything.

“Aza!” Oz shouted to get my attention. “When I put my hand through this barrier, it’s going to disappear. Put your hand against the wall beside mine.”

I stared at him for a second, processing what he had said. After I registered his words, I put my hand against the barrier, right against his.

“When I say go, you grab my hand. I won’t let you fall. Alright?” He was shouting, but he didn’t sound angry. He sounded scared. I didn’t say anything. I didn’t know what to say. I just nodded.

“One,” he began. “Two. Three. Go!”

I started to close my hand around his. He grabbed my wrist as the barrier beneath me disappeared, and I started to fall again. My body dropped, but Oz kept my hand in place, making sure I didn’t fall. I felt numb, too shocked to feel much of anything.

Oz started to pull me up. I put my feet against the side of the cliff and grabbed onto the edge with my other hand. I half-climbed, half-was-pulled up the side of the cliff until I was able to swing one of my knees up onto the grass. As soon as I did, I let go of his hand and stood, running no less than twenty feet from the edge of the cliff. When I was sure I was far enough away, I stopped and collapsed onto the ground.

I felt Oz’s arms around my shoulders.
