TATE

Tate spent the next few days in his studio, finally managing to capture some of the inspiration he’d been chasing with his escape to Mistletoe Falls. He’d made a sketch of Eldon the night before, unable to sleep until he put pencil to paper to capture the lines of Eldon’s face in the light.

After a quick breakfast the next morning in the Inn’s dining room, Tate hurried to his studio and got to work. He barely made time to eat, much less sleep, but had a half dozen paintings in progress in a few days’ time. His shoulders ached and he was covered in paint.

But he hadn’t been so happy in months, if not years.

After a quick shower in the loft’s outdated bathroom, Tate dressed and made his way over to Carol’s. He asked her to fix whatever Eldon’s favorite food was, then added an order of sandwiches and soup for two. Loaded down with delicious-smelling food, he headed to Deck the Walls. He hadn’t seen Eldon since the night of the parade and could use a little bit of his snark to add a sweet layer of frosting to his day.

The jingle of the bell at Deck the Walls didn’t bring Eldon running. Tate stood in the entrance for a moment before beginning to look around the shop. It took him a few minutes to find Eldon at the back of the store, carrying a box from the back.

He jumped when he saw Tate, then gave him an odd look.

“Hey sweetheart.”

Eldon scowled. “You have paint on your face.”

“I’ve been working hard. Look at these muscles.” Tate balanced the bag of food in his uninjured hand and curled his arm up. “Check out that bicep.”

Eldon leaned closer and squinted. “I think I see something. Not sure, though. It’s so tiny.”

“Cruel man. I suppose you don’t want this delicious lunch I brought either. Just break my heart over and over again.”

“Lunch?” Eldon looked up at him with a tired smile. “I could eat.”

He put the box down on a shelf and led Tate up a set of stairs to a room at the back of the store. The layout was similar to the second floor of his own building, simply opposite in floor plan.

Well, that and the fact that Tate’s wasn’t a store. Minor details.

The back room was clearly a well-loved space. It had an antique desk and an oversized couch and other cozy decor. Eldon sank down on the couch with a tired groan.

“What’s going on?” Tate asked. He sat down close to Eldon, the bag of food in his lap.

“No Balls Ball,” Eldon said, dropping his head back onto the sofa and closing his eyes.

“Um, what?

Eldon opened one eye and rolled his head. “Have you been living under a rock all week?”

Tate kinda had, actually. “Yeah?”

“Short version. Bunch of puppies and kittens rescued. They need medical care and food, so we’re having a ball to raise money.”

“And by we, you mean….”

“Me and my cousins and the new vet in town, Miles.
