While his squadron was bidding Carlos Zubizarreta farewell, Alberto Philippi prepared himself for another cold night in the open after his successful ejection, unaware that he had lost two good friends and some other colleagues in a matter of hours.

Ravenously hungry, he spotted some nearby lambs, pulled out his service revolver and took aim. A dull click echoed from the chamber; it hadn’t survived the seawater. He improvised a snare and caught six of them. Grabbing the best one, he slit its throat and skinned, gutted and butchered it with his hunting knife. He gathered a pile of peat, only to discover that his matches were damp too. Ever resourceful, he lit his fire with an emergency flare from his survival kit. He enjoyed the warmth from the flames and planned his next move as he watched a leg and shoulder of lamb start to sizzle. As he feasted, he recounted his favourite prayer. ‘The Lord is my shepherd, I shall not want…’

Living on his wits and hunting skills, sheltering in abandoned buildings, Alberto Philippi avoided capture for three days. On the fourth he saw a group of men working near the south coast of East Falkland and signalled them with a mirror. Their leader turned out to be a local farmer. ‘He was very polite,’ Philippi says. ‘He gave me sandwiches, cake and chocolate. He took me to meet his family and I had a bath. He was a one hundred per cent nice person.’ Instead of handing him over to the British, the Falklander allowed his guest to be picked up by an Argentinian helicopter. Five days after ejecting, Philippi was flown back home, ready to rejoin the fight.
