The Holy Essene Women

There must have been a great deal of excitement on Mount Carmel as those in charge realized that the time had come to choose from among the girls in the school the twelve who were to be presented to the angel. The excitement must have been even greater on the bright morning Mary was chosen. It is not known whether, that morning, Joseph was also living there on the mountain. His age at the time of the marriage—thirty-six—suggests that he may have been for some time a member of the branch of Essenes who did not marry. Ordinarily he would have been married before twenty. Some exegetes think that the brothers and sister of Jesus were Joseph’s children by a former marriage and that, therefore, Mary did remain a virgin all her life. However, the lengths to which the authors of the Bible go to establish Joseph’s lineage all the way back to Adam would indicate that as much care was taken in choosing him for his role in the training of Jesus as was taken with Mary. It is also not known whether, at the time of the betrothal, Joseph, realizing that his monastic days were over, left Mount Carmel and went to Nazareth to start his carpentry shop and prepare a home for Mary or whether he had left earlier and was summoned back after the angel had made the choice.

The Bible shows Joseph as being surprised to learn that the betrothed Mary was pregnant, and he at first refused to marry her. The Edgar Cayce readings explain that Joseph was concerned mainly about what the neighbors might say. It figures that, as an Essene, Joseph would have known he was not to be the actual father of the Christ; and, as a devout Jew, living in a small town, it would have been understandable for him to get upset when he discovered that the Incarnation had preceded a marriage. It would have been only as an Essene that Joseph could have accepted the message from his soul-mind during a dream that events were proceeding according to the Divine Plan and that he should not resist his role: The readings establish that the Essenes accepted dreams as a means for this kind of communication.

Cayce once did a Life reading for a girl of seventeen who had a similar experience with a dream. This was on September 4, 1934 (649-1), and Cayce, pursuing the girl’s former sojourns, said:

“Before that we find the entity was in that land known as the Holy Land during the period when there had been those people who had looked and longed for, been expectant of, the coming of the promise to a people who sought relief from the material bondage as well as from the spiritual activities of those that gormandized themselves and their own interests in the sale of privilege in the activities of those things that were of the letter of the law without the spirit thereof. The entity
