Doorways of Evil

Great responsibility goes along with the process of spiritual and psychic unfoldment. Just as a person would wear protective clothing when going to work in an electrical power plant, we also need to be protected when we delve into the spiritual world. Why? Cayce put it very well in a reading when he said, “As there is, then, a personal savior, there is the personal devil.”7

Hugh Lynn Cayce conducted investigations into the possible consequences of using Ouija™ boards and automatic writing. According to his book, Venture Inward, people can, unwittingly, become possessed by discarnate evil spirits by use of such devices. He chronicled several frightening cases in which people contacted, through the Ouija board, what appeared to be benevolent beings who dwelt in the higher spiritual realms. After repeated communications, however, these beings took over the people conducting psychic experiments and turned their existence into a living nightmare. Whether these invading influences were part of the collective unconscious mind or separate evil entities is irrelevant. The end result was disastrous: The individual’s free will had been given over to some unseen power which intended great harm.

“The danger with Ouija boards,” Hugh Lynn said in a private conversation with the author, “is that they are so easy to use. It takes very little effort to open that ‘doorway’ into what Dad [Edgar Cayce] called the ‘borderland.’ This area is where earthbound souls are gathered, looking for an entrance into the earth by either automatic writing, Ouija boards or mediumship.”

However, there are some people who have had great spiritual success with using Ouija boards. Author-medium Jane Roberts wrote many fascinating books based on her psychic relationship with a discarnate entity named Seth, who spoke through her and dictated books. Her initial contact with him was through a Ouija board. It is the indiscriminate approach to them and to mediumship, which can result in rare instances, that Hugh Lynn documented in Venture Inward.

Improper meditation can also lead to psychic openings and to undesirable psychic influences and attacks. A number of people came to Cayce with disturbing experiences with discarnate entities. The readings indicated that this resulted from an improper or premature opening of the body’s spiritual centers by practicing a form of meditation which created an avenue through which these spirits could influence and cause problems of possession.

One woman who was experiencing psychotic episodes with delusions of persecution wrote to Cayce. The subsequent reading indicated that she had opened herself to possession through “study” (probably a form of meditation): “It is indicated that the body is a supersensitive individual entity who has allowed itself through study, through opening the centers of the body, to become possessed . . .”8 (There is a safe method of meditation recommended by the Cayce readings discussed in chapter 9, “Our Beloved Guardian Angels.”)

Although the possession cases in Venture Inward didn’t result in an exorcism, the clergy was called in and prayers were invoked to free them from the evil influences. “The frightening thing about these
