CHAPTER THREE

Naku parked in the driveway of his Lahaina residence on Ipukula Way. It was a Craftsman two-bedroom bungalow that he had called home since shortly after quitting the force. The place suited him for its old time charm and fruit trees in the backyard, proximity to work, play, and pretty much whatever else he needed to do.

Ambling across the hardwood flooring, Naku bypassed the Great Room and kitchen and headed straight to his bedroom, where he changed clothes and went to his exercise room for a workout. He had everything he needed to keep in shape. In the private detective business, any edge one could have in physical fitness might well make the difference when having to deal with bad people.

He thought about Kathryn. She was due back on the island tomorrow and he hoped to pick up where they left off. Or did he? Their brief time apart had given them both time to think about what they truly wanted out of this relationship. He could count on one hand the number of serious relationships he'd had. Did that mean he wasn't cut out for a long romance, much less marriage and family? Or was he simply afraid to try?

As his former girlfriend Gayle crept into his mind, Naku couldn't help but wonder if she was the one who got away. Or had they never really been meant to be together for the long run in the first place?

He was up early the following morning to go horseback riding. It was one of his greatest passions to feel the wind and the spirits of his forefathers. After driving down Honoapiilani Highway, he turned onto Kai Hele Ku Street and soon arrived at the ranch of his friend Gabriel Plummer who, along with his wife Tully, had several horses. Naku had warmed up to a beautiful mare named Callie. He had a standing invitation to ride the horse whenever he wanted and Naku tried to take advantage of this at least twice a week. The last time he'd gone riding was with Kathryn and her daughter, Madlyn. Both had proven to be more than capable and they had a good time. He imagined they would do it again soon.

After saddling up Callie, Naku went for a good, long ride in the Launiupoko Valley foothills. He took in the seemingly endless view of the Pacific Ocean spread out before him and the neighboring island of Lanai, which at the moment was partially shrouded by thick clouds.

When his ride was over forty-five minutes later, he went home, shaved, showered, and changed into a print shirt and slacks, before heading out to talk to the man who had hired Frank Iwamoto to investigate suspected infidelity.

Naku drove down Honoapiilani Highway to Wailea, a 1500-acre resort community in South Maui known for its pristine sandy beaches, golf courses, and high end homes. After hanging a right on Kapali Street, he made his way to Pualoa Nani Place, where Iwamoto's client Douglas Winslow lived.

Naku drove up to a security gate where a guard was on duty.
