In the 19th century, a band of outsiders sought inspiration from science and engineering to create a new theory of economics. It is time to do so again.

The Great Yinification

Scientists have long dreamed of a Grand Unified Theory that will explain all the known physical forces and the evolution of the universe. Some have even hoped for a theory that would unite physics, chemistry, biology, psychology, sociology - all the physical and social sciences - in a single model. The ultimate aim of the Enlightenment, according to philosophers Max Horkheimer and Theodor W. Adorno, was to make “dissimilar things comparable by reducing them to abstract quantities. For the Enlightenment, anything which cannot be resolved into numbers, and ultimately one, is illusion; modern positivism consigns it to poetry. Unity remains the watchword from Parmenides to Russell. All gods and qualities must be destroyed.”58 As Vilfredo Pareto wrote: “It is only the imperfections of the human mind which multiply the divisions of the sciences, separating astronomy from physics or chemistry, the natural sciences from the social sciences. In essence, science is one. It is none other than the truth.”59
