1. Not all biocentrists may find Nolt’s argument satisfactory, however, because it does not advocate or require self-transcendence toward all living things: ‘We need not be self-transcendent toward all of [nature]; but given the current threats to nature, we will best preserve satisfiable hope by being self-transcendent toward a good bit of it’ (p. 44, this volume).

2. This qualifier—‘insofar as this is reasonably possible and consistent with other obligations’—is implied throughout the argument, though I omit it from the sub-conclusions for brevity. I consider this restriction a fundamental aspect of any moral principle, one that goes hand-in-hand with the reality that all or virtually all moral principles are prima facie principles rather than absolute ones.
