HOME SWEET HOME II

Crystal clear water shot out from the rocks high above the Falls, allowing anyone to take a refreshing drink or a freezing shower. The series of underground waterfalls flowed down into another series of streams that lead to the end of the cavern and then disappeared down a stoop into the Earth. All kinds of colorful crystals, quartz, mica, and metals were embedded in the rock in the Falls. It was the only tranquil cavern in the mountain, but as beautiful as it was, it was also potentially deadly. Special care had to be taken not to fall down one of the many bottomless stoops and gurgling spring holes that randomly appeared throughout the Falls.

Reggie and Jeremy blended in well for the first few days or weeks. It was impossible to tell when the days began and ended since there was no sunlight, and they quickly lost track of time. They had made themselves as invisible as possible to avoid getting into fights, which would start spontaneously for no apparent reason. They had grown paler by the day just like everyone else, and the strictly measured rations were already wearing on them, making them thinner and weaker. They were also tired from the general lack of sleep caused by the stress of being trapped. Now they understood how someone could go crazy and crack in this dark netherworld.

Rhino, Power, and some of the other gamers met regularly in the back, far-reaches of the Falls. They called themselves the “Pack” and no one else was ever allowed into their meetings. Whenever Reggie and Jeremy went to rinse off in the shower, Rhino would lash out at them.

“Hey, traitors! Figured out a way to save your own butts yet?” he would taunt, but Reggie and Jeremy always ignored him and Rhino would usually just drift back into the darkness. Rhino continued his taunting whenever he saw them, even though someone in his Pack would always tell him to relax.

The Pack was more paranoid than everyone else. They hadn’t ever tried to escape, and they never seemed to do anything except bully other boys, so Reggie and Jeremy determined that the Pack was poison and to be avoided at all costs.

It was pretty common that some gamer would randomly lash out at another and then go his separate way without a fight breaking out. It was psycho, but everyone accepted it as normal. Reggie and Jeremy kept to themselves, and decided not to talk with anyone other than Snake.

After what seemed like a few weeks—it was impossible to tell how long because time itself had become so confusing—Jeremy’s eyes had completely adjusted to the darkness and his pupils were wide open like a mole’s. Now his and Reggie’s eyes were black like everyone else’s. With his new ‘night vision,’ Jeremy started seeing things that he had never noticed before, like the gentle varying shades of shale that were layered endlessly throughout the excavated chambers. Crystalline patches, various ore veins, mica patches, massive expanses of granite.
