Chapter Eleven

On the journey into the city the next morning, Josie kept Chen at bay. She was polite but distant, never inviting conversation of any kind. It hurt him, she knew, but she had no other way of handling what she’d been told. After a long and sleepless night, she was no closer to resolving the conundrum he presented to her.

How could she possibly believe in time-travel and a future world where people were immortal and found their soul mates amongst those from the past? How could she believe that Chen was hundreds of years old when he looked no older than twenty?

And what was she to do with the idea that he had come back through time for her specifically? That, somehow, he’d found out about her and known she was his one true love. It made no sense. She was nobody special. And though he looked at her as if she were, she knew better. It was just some delusion he was suffering.

Yet, she had promised to trust him. And she broke that promise. He’d told her she wouldn’t believe him and she hadn’t. That hurt her most.

It led her to the inevitable crux of the matter. To the most critical issue of all. If she believed him, what would that mean for her? Would she go into the future with him, leaving everything she knew behind? Even if it were possible, and that was still contentious, it would be a huge request. She would never see her parents again. Everything she knew, every safe, comfortable aspect of her life, would be stripped away. It would require incredible bravery to embrace something so different from everything she knew. And she was not brave or strong or determined. She wasn’t even willing to undertake the rigors of travel required to see the wonders of her own world, let alone those of the future.

But what was the alternative? Staying where she was without Chen at her side, slowly shrivelling up until there was nothing left of her but her tinkerings that nobody wanted to hear?

Though she had fought hard not to allow it to happen, she couldn’t deny that Chen had become the most important person in her life. Imagining life without him now was impossible. Yet, once he realised she wouldn’t return home with him, he would leave her. And if by some miracle he decided to stay here with her, they would be no better off. They couldn’t marry. All they could ever have was what they had now, and once Wilmington was no longer a threat they wouldn’t even have that.

Did she love him? Though the only love she’d ever known was what she felt for her parents, she recognised the emotion for what it was. Josie did love Chen with all of her silly, frightened, spinster heart.

It was all too impossible. Josie, therefore, chose to follow the decision-making path most familiar to her: ignore the problem and hope it resolved itself.

Once they’d taken the cable car
