And now, finally, God answered Job from the eye of a violent storm. He said: “Why do you confuse the issue? Why do you talk without knowing what you’re talking about?”

–Job 38:1-2 MSG

Chapter 5: Keeping it Real

There used to be a common saying that went like this: “Some people are so heavenly minded that they’re no earthly use.” I’m afraid it’s a sad fact of life that there are people I meet like this today, those who like to spend all their time with their head in the clouds. I’m thinking especially of those Christians who lean toward the more ecstatic end of the religious spectrum, and who enjoy telling people about their latest prophetic dream or heavenly vision.

Sometimes, these people seem to have more pictures than Dreamworks. They are always claiming to see things and to have a hotline to what the Holy Spirit is revealing. They have one thing right, they put a high value on seeing the world from Heaven’s perspective. But they sometimes have another thing dangerously wrong; they tend to lack common sense and personal accountability when it comes to discerning whether their prophecies are genuine, and they can too often fail to suggest prudent and practical ways for living in the real world.

Recently, my wife and I listened to an interview with several ministers, both introduced as having a prophetic ministry, both with a large following in the more charismatic part of God’s worldwide Church. They were giving what they claimed to be a prophetic perspective about the current Corona Storm, so we tuned in with openness and interest, eager to hear what they thought the Father was saying. What followed was very alarming.

Both seemed to be committed to a simplistic worldview in which there are only two ways of seeing something like the Corona Storm—as either God-sent, to judge the world and call it to repentance, or devil-sent, and in need of rebuking. At times they were seeming to say it was one, at other times, both. What they both failed to understand is that some storms are neither heavenly nor hellish in origin. While they may be used by Heaven and exploited by hell, their origin is something much more, well yes, down-to-earth.

I’ll explain what I mean in a moment, but let me just remind you at this point that when King Solomon was told by God that he could have anything he wanted, he didn’t ask for riches and fame, he asked for wisdom and knowledge to lead the people. God granted him his request. If you read what King Solomon wrote in the Book of Proverbs, you’ll see that he knew the Father’s ways (knowledge) and he had a supernatural ability to help people to apply that in their lives in practical ways (wisdom). In other words, the Holy Spirit gave King Solomon access to things that can only be known by revelation, and then inspired him to give down-to-earth guidance to the people he led about how to reign in life in day-to-day relationships and work.
