I found a chain hotel outside Tyler. I called Elle once I’d had time to think about what to say. I said Red had gotten to Uncertain early because he got a tip from some mob hustlers in Shreveport about a drug deal. I said he’d gone in to see if Rose was there, or Topper, but they’d come and gone and were headed out to somewhere around Abilene, which is kind of what we’d been thinking. I didn’t go beyond that.

I said we’d be going to West Texas tomorrow, with the information from Uncertain and Blaine and my time with Topper, and I’d let her know what I heard and for her to do the same. I said she might want to make arrangements with a bank in Fort Worth. She said she had already drawn the cash and would just keep it at her house in a safe place. Pending. I said it might be a couple of days. I knew I had lied to her—had been lying to her, directly and by omission—and I would likely lie to her again. It was that way.

Red and I didn’t talk until morning. He said he had slept like a log and to my surprise I had, too. I guess bone-grinding exhaustion can stifle even the worst of bad dreams.
