Chapter 12

WEARING A SWEATER WITH TWO STRATEGICALLY PLACED BOWS…

The next customer to the shop found Bella under the tree, in plaid slacks, with her butt in the air.

At the jingle of the bell, she shouted, “I’ll be with you in a second.” She just wanted to finish positioning the skirt.

“Don’t hurry on my account. I’m enjoying the view.”

Leif! Her head lifted too fast, hit a branch, her hair got caught, the whole tree swayed, and Bella froze as Leif chuckled.

“Hold still. I’ll help you get loose.”

Deft fingers, gentle and quick, helped her untangle without damage. She gasped when she slid out from under the tree and found herself hoisted to her feet, facing a smiling elf with a twinkle in his eye.

Her heart skipped a beat. He’d returned. What did it mean?

“Hi,” she managed to mutter.

“Hello to you, too. Sorry it took me so long to return.”

“Guess you were busy.”

“Too busy,” he grumbled. “I meant to return earlier. I’m very glad to see you.” His lips pressed to hers in a light kiss of hello.

She flung her arms around him and embraced him back firmly and with tongue. They eventually broke apart, rather breathless.

He chuckled. “Well, that is a nice hello.”

“I’m glad to see you.” Her shy admission.

“As if I could stay away.” He stroked a finger down her cheek.

“Is everything okay in the North Pole?”

He grimaced. “Yes and no. We had a fire.”

“Oh no!”

“Luckily only one building was lost and no one hurt.”

“Was it an accident?” She’d stopped using candles when she got Big Fluff. One hairy tail almost igniting was enough to convince her to try rechargeable solar-powered versions instead.

“They need to wait for it to cool to find out how it started. And then, before I could even hit a shower, some new information arose in the Krampus investigation that required looking into.”

“Oh? What did you find out?”

“His wife appears to be the one who helped him escape.”

“Mrs. Claus?” She huffed on a high note. “Oh, that’s sweet.”

A brow angled in sync with his confused, “Sweet how?”

“Because even after all this time, she must love him if she wanted to set him free.”

“The thing in that prison isn’t her husband anymore. Her actions have put everyone in danger.” Leif rubbed a hand over his face.

“Has anyone talked to her?”

“Can’t because she’s disappeared. No one knows where’s she’s gone or how to find her.”

“I’m sure you’ll catch a break soon.”

“Maybe.” He didn’t sound so certain. “What about you? Any problems with cookies or other things while I was gone?”

She shook her head. “Not a thing.”

He glanced past her. “I see you got the window fixed. Sorry I wasn’t here to help.”

“Mindy knew someone, thankfully. My biggest problem was my mom. When she found out about the vandalism, she wanted me to go stay in a hotel.” She rolled her eyes.

“She has a point. Staying elsewhere would have made you safer in case that person animating cookies returned.”

“If I’d left, how would you have found me?”

“I can’t tell you. North Pole secret.
