Looking them over, he doesn’t know what on earth to do. It is not only dilemma, it is almost quadri-lemma. Perhaps he might put a line between “Christian Gentleman” on the one hand and the “American White Man” on the other, and so arrange a very tremendous and puzzling dilemma.
My friend comes and sits down with me and asks me frankly what to do about it. And I? Why, I appeal to you, Gentle Reader. What should he do about it?
My friend’s fault is that he is logical. His reasoning is a clean, simple process like two plus two equal four. This is the cause of his present unrest. Other folk are deliciously impervious to reason. They are pacifists with the help of the police and backed by careful preparation for war. They are filled with Good Will for all men, provided these men are in their places and certain of them kept there by severe discountenance. In that case courtesy smooths human relations. They certainly aim to treat others as they want to be treated themselves, so far as this is consistent with their own necessarily exclusive position. This position must be maintained by propaganda inculcating a perfectly defensible contempt for inferiors and suspicion of strangers and radicals. They believe in liberty under a firm police system backed by patriotism and an organization of work which will yield profit to capital. And, of course, they believe in poverty so long as they have sufficient wealth. This they are certain is the way to make America the greatest country on earth for white supremacy.
This makes my friend tear his pale hair. “How can they do it?” he yells. “It ain’t reasonable.” I explained patiently: possibly they are playing acrostics. See how they might arrange their meanings?
