Other Biomaterial-Based Non-viral Vectors

Despite liposomes, cationic polymer and dendrimer being the most studied non-viral gene delivery systems, the list of systems under investigation is much longer, including, but not confined to: nanoparticle systems, based on gold [180], silica [181] and carbon nanotubes [182, 183]; biodegradable polymers, including poly(4-hydroxy-L-proline ester) [184], poly[α-(4-aminobutyl)-L-glycolic acid] [185], poly(amino-ester) [186, 187], phosphorus containing degradable polymers and cationic synthetic peptides [72]. Although for certain applications some of these vectors have found some degree of success they come out of the scope of the topic of this chapter. For a more detailed review see [73].
