Chapter Five
Stoker
Something is going on with Layla. To survive prison, I had to learn to read people, and Layla isnât as good at hiding from me as she thinks. Whatever sheâs into, whatever has her running scared, Iâm going to get to the bottom of it.
If she was anyone else, I wouldnât deal with her fucking problems, but itâs Layla. Even if she didnât mean something to the club, she means something to meâor sheâs starting to. I didnât want to feel that connection to herâto anyoneâbut I canât help it. Thereâs something about her. Something that makes me want things I never dreamed I could have. She makes me think about the possibility of a future, a life. That seemed out of reach before, an idea I could barely touch my fingertips too. I shouldnât be thinking about this shit, not after such a short time.
I text Nox after I leave her flat. He tells me heâs at the clubhouse and that heâll wait for me there, so I ride over. As always, being on the back of my bike makes me feel free and easy. I can almost forget the past decade when Iâm riding. I let my mind empty of everything but enjoying the open road.
As I pull up outside the clubhouse, I still feel like a visitor, a stranger, even though Iâm neither of those things. This world is mine, and I belong in it, no matter what my brain thinks.
I head into the building and find Nox sitting at the bar in the common room talking with Levi. Both brothers look deep in conversation and while I donât want to interrupt shit, this is fucking important.
Sheâs important.
The air feels too thin when I think about shit happening to her, and that hunk of meat in my chest beats a little faster.
I tell myself itâs because sheâs part of the club and Briellaâs friend, but itâs more than that.
I want to take care of Layla.
I need to keep her safe and Iâll do whatever it takes to ensure that.
Nox peers up as I approach. The brother is built. He looks like he could crush my windpipe with barely more than a squeeze. All the brothers do, myself included.
âGive us a minute,â Nox says to Levi, who instantly pushes to his feet and pats my shoulder.
I didnât know Levi before I went inside, but the guy still treats me like fucking family. That is the way of the club.
Brotherhood.
Loyalty.
Trust.
Honour.
Itâs why I joined. Itâs why I remained true to my brothers. Itâs why I never snitched for a shorter sentence. I would have rather spent two lifetimes in prison than betray my brothers.
These are the rules I abide by.
The code I live by.
If you donât have honour, what do you have?
I take Leviâs vacated seat and clasp my hands together on the bar top as I consider how the fuck to broach this shit. This isnât going to be easy, especially considering my brothers like Layla, see her as part of the club family.
