Chapter 18 – Natasha

The squat rambler nestled alone in the pines. Although Cranberry and her husband lived just down the dirt road, the trees were thick enough that neither house was visible to the other. The thick shadows hid us as we approached on foot.

“It turns out I’m going to need your help with this, Natasha,” Grim said beside me. I nodded and he moved closer. Brushing the whisps of hair from my ear, he leaned down to whisper. “You know, it’s a good thing you decided to come along.”

I narrowed my eyes. “You know,” I mocked, mimicking his sly cadence. “I wonder how coincidental my coming actually is.”

A blistering grin split his face. My heartbeat doubled, and I wondered what it would be like to taste that smile. “If you kidnap the faun hart and drive him across the bridge, I can safely keep my contract and do my business.”

I wanted to be annoyed. I really did. The sandman behind me couldn’t do this without me, and I was his loophole. “You could have asked at dinner,” I muttered.

Grim murmured, low and warm. It made a fire spark low in my belly. “Would you have said yes?”

“We’ll never know. But your penchant for trickery isn’t going to earn you any points.”

“It’s seen me along thus far,” he laughed darkly.

Yeah, and the locals want your head. I pursed my lips. What we were about to do was significant. This could help Peaches, who had been nothing but kind to me. I might not have wanted a friend, but she pushed passed my walls and buried herself in my heart. So if I could repay that than I needed to set this turmoil aside. I could still carry out my mission later.

That’s what I’ll do. Pretend the locals’ desire to remove the threat wasn’t hanging in the background. Deal with it later. It wasn’t the healthiest form of coping, but it was a favorite of mine.

“Securing him and driving him to the mainland—that’s complicated. What if I said I had a better idea?” I drawled. I stepped away from him, moving into a shaft of moonlight.

“I’m all ears,” he murmured. That voice was pure velvet.

Heat pooled between my legs, and my eyes fluttered closed for the briefest of moments.

Fate help me!

Pulling my shirt over my head, I tossed it to him. There was no missing the heat that blazed in those violet orbs. His eyes glowed feral as I unhooked my bra and likewise launched it in his direction.

“The first rule about hunting, is not to let your prey catch your scent,” I recited. Just because my knowledge came from books and internet articles instead of experiences with my pack, didn’t mean I didn’t know what I was talking about.

When I popped the button on my jeans, Grim stepped forward. I wagged my finger at him and turned around. Kicking off my shoes, I finished stripping and began to shift forms at the same time.

“Do you—” Grim’s voice was husky. He cleared his throat and began again.
