Chapter Thirteen

Max

I woke up burritoed in a tangle of dark green sheets, a bright ray of sun bouncing off my face. The bed was comfortable, and it was the first time in ages that I’d slept without nightmares. The room was relatively neat, and very familiar. After Declan and the guys spent half an hour debating the very loose plan I suggested, I fell asleep slouching in the chair. Exhaustion hit me like a wave of bricks and I didn’t even remember waking up and moving to a bed.

Breathing in, my cheeks warmed. I pressed my face into the pillow, trying to place the scent. I wasn’t one of those girls who could pick out different competing layers of notes. All I could say was that it reminded me of a dark and cozy winter night and felt distinctly masculine. Sitting up, I stared around the room, surprised by how neat it was. Other than Wade’s room, Eli’s was the only one that I’d seen, and I was fairly certain that’s where I was now. The dresser and small desk were made of a dark wood, and there were surprisingly few personal items.

Cyrus wasn’t exactly a warm and fuzzy person; we never had many sentimental knick knacks or decorations filling our old place. So I guess I shouldn’t be surprised that Seamus was the same, nor that he’d probably raised his son in the same vein. Still, Eli was mischievous and fun enough that something about the place just felt off for him. Like it wasn’t really home.

Where had he slept last night? I wasn’t a light sleeper, but I definitely would have noticed if someone else slept next to me the whole night.

When I stood, a rush of cool air chilled my legs, reminding me that I was still wearing nothing but a baggy T-shirt. Last night, under the weird haze between waking and sleeping, it hadn’t been a big deal, and clothing wasn’t the first thing on my mind. But now, in the light of day, when I’d spent the night huddled up in Eli’s bed, I was distinctly aware of the fact that I was uncomfortably close to naked. What were the odds that I could sneak down the stairs, out the door, and back into my cabin without the guys or anyone else seeing me?

Probably not great.

I briefly weighed the options and decided that while I was generally anti-snooping, in this case, I would go through a few drawers until I found a pair of sweatpants or shorts that I could borrow.

On the top of the dresser was a new toothbrush, still wrapped in plastic. I couldn’t suppress the eye roll. Why was I not surprised that Eli would have a steady supply of fresh toiletries for his guests? Honestly, I was kind of shocked there wasn’t a girl in his bed when I showed up last night.

Instantly, my mind filled with an image of Sharla—had she been curled up in these very blankets with Eli
