A couple of hours later and Pia had just stepped out of the shower after her day at work when there was a knock on the door to her flat. Quickly throwing on a dressing gown, she went across and opened it to find Ronnie standing there dressed in a bright orange kaftan with a towel tucked under her arm. She looked as though she was off to the beach.

‘Are you off out somewhere tonight?’ Ronnie asked.

‘No. I was just getting changed. Why? What did you have in mind?’

‘Do you fancy a dip in the hot tub? With a glass of rosé?’ She whipped out a bottle of pink chilled wine from her bag. ‘I’ve asked Frank to get it going for me. I don’t think it’s ever been used. It’s such a lovely evening out there – what do you say? Shall we give it a whirl?’

‘Oh Ronnie, I’d love to, but I don’t have a swimsuit. I’m more than happy to come along, though, and perch on the edge. And drink lots of wine with you.’

‘Perfect! I’ll go and find some glasses and see you over there.’

When Pia made it over to the hot tub, Ronnie was already inside, luxuriating in the water, her arms outstretched on the lip behind her, looking like a glamorous film star.

‘Oh my goodness! This is the life. Mateo doesn’t know what he’s missing.’ She twirled an ankle around, her painted toenails visible just beneath the water. ‘Said he was going to take a nap. Honestly! Anyway, why don’t you pour the wine, darling?’

‘Good idea.’ Pia took the wine from the cooler and poured the two waiting glasses on the side. She had to admit, seeing the bubbles frothing in the tub, that it looked very inviting and she wished she could jump in and join Ronnie.

‘So tell me, what’s rattled Jackson’s cage today?’ Ronnie asked, sipping on her wine, as Pia settled down on the step beside her, her gaze transported to the golden horizon in front of her.

‘Er…’ Where Jackson was closed off and kept most things personal to himself, Ronnie was much more of an open book. Pia didn’t feel comfortable chatting about her boss, especially to his mother. Besides, she would be the last person to know what was going on inside Jackson’s head.

‘I heard him go out on the bike earlier and normally when he does that, it’s because he’s wound up over something. He’s always done it, even when he was a kid. At eight or nine he would run off, usually after I’d grounded him, and jump on his pushbike and head into the countryside. I would end up walking the roads of the village, calling out his name, asking people to keep an eye out, and he’d roll back home hours later. The locals got to know him, and they’d say, “Has he done a runner again?” It was embarrassing. Then when he got a moped things only got worse. It gave him even more freedom and I barely saw him.
