“Fish sticks,” Amy told Tasha as they walked to school the next morning. “And peas. Tomato salad.” Her brow puckered. “And I’m seeing glazed doughnuts again.”

“No way,” Tasha objected. “School lunches never contain the same food two days in a row. I think it’s against the law or something. You’re confusing the future with the past.”

Amy considered this. “I could be losing the gift already,” she said.

“Geez, I hope not!” Tasha cried in alarm. “I’ve got so many questions for you! You have to tell me if I’m going to be a famous writer someday. And if I’m going to get married, and how many kids I’ll have, all that kind of stuff. Oh, and if the dentist is going to find any cavities when I go for my checkup next week, and—”

“Whoa!” Amy broke in. “I’m not a machine, Tasha! And don’t be so greedy! Like I told you, I don’t know how this thing works. I might have only a few predictions left. And if we don’t get glazed doughnuts again today, I’ll know it’s starting to mess up. Because I’m getting a very clear picture of the lunch trays in my head.”

“Well, let’s not waste your talent with lunch predictions,” Tasha said hastily. “And seriously, Amy, I think you ought to charge people. Why give your gift away for free? You could make some real money!”

That wasn’t a bad idea, Amy thought. She didn’t receive a fortune in allowance each week, and she didn’t have a regular baby-sitting job or any other way to make extra cash. On the other hand, she seriously doubted that many people would truly believe she could tell fortunes.

She was wrong. As they approached Parkside Middle School, she noted that there seemed to be a lot more people than usual gathered on the front steps. And most of them turned out to be waiting for her.

Clearly, the Parkside rumor mill had been churning at top speed. She didn’t even know most of the kids waiting to see her.

Tasha was thrilled. “Tell them it’s a dollar a question. No, a dollar fifty.”

But Amy was having second thoughts about charging. “I think I should do freebies today,” she told Tasha. “Until I’m absolutely, positively sure everything comes true.”

“Just until lunch,” Tasha proposed. “If there are doughnuts, you start making them pay.”

Amy faced the clamoring crowd on the steps. “Listen, you guys, I don’t know how this works, and I might not—”

She didn’t get any farther. A tall, blond girl moved to the front, and no one objected. Amy didn’t know her, but she recognized the girl immediately—Lorna Leaver, the most popular girl in the ninth grade. Captain of the cheerleading squad, part-time model, and finalist in the California Junior Miss All-American Sweetheart beauty pageant last year. Her question was abrupt and to the point.

“Will I win California Junior Miss All-American Sweetheart next month?” she demanded.

Amy took in the girl’s beautiful features and perfect figure, and immediately an image formed in her mind. A crown
