CHAPTER 29

Carter and Gianna moved from the kitchen and accessed a passageway on the right.

“For a moment, I thought you were going to show me your home office,” Gianna told him.

“Is that so? It’s a mess. Blueprints everywhere.”

“It must be an important room. Keypad access.”

“Very observant of you, but it’s pretty boring. Actually, it’s two offices, one would be for my wife.”

Gianna tried not to squirm. “Again, that’s thoughtful of you.”

“It was the right thing to do. I’m using it now, but when she arrives, I will clear out.”

Carter opened the door leading to the back patio and Gianna stepped out.

“That’s a nice….” The view muted her train of thought. “Wow,” she breathed out.

The back patio covered the length of the home and led to the pool and flourishing vegetation in the backyard.

“This is quite a view,” Gianna remarked, moving towards the patio steps leading to the backyard. She halted, gazing around.

Carter stood beside her. “Since you’re excited, I’ll definitely show you my favorite spot.”

“Show me!” She clutched his fingers.

He responded likewise, and they moved forward.

Almost an hour later, Carter and Gianna strode up the back patio. They’d taken the electric cart to a beautiful lake at the edge of the property.

“How do you find the discipline to leave home in the mornings?” Gianna harassed him. “This backyard would keep me outside, and that view of the lake is a writer’s dream.”

A spontaneous chuckle left Carter. “It’s hard, but my clients need me. Church needs me. Do I need to go on? But feel free to use it anytime.”

She eyed him as they neared the back door. “I wouldn’t want to intrude. Even though the gazebo overlooking the lake is tempting.”

“Only the gazebo?”

She opened her mouth to speak, but the heated expression in his eyes halted her breath. He was sending shivers all the way to her toes. She felt her body leaning in and had to catch herself. “You… you need to stop doing that,” she mumbled, shifting her weight from one leg to the other.

“Doing what?” he asked innocently.

“You know, Carter,” she pushed out, looking away.

“Tell no one,” he said quietly, causing her to look at him.

“What?”

“I enjoy looking at you,” he said softly.

She gaped at him, her thoughts running wild.

He pushed out a ragged breath and opened the door. “I’m not sure why, but when it comes to you, my heart is an open door.”

Stunned by his confession, she could not find appropriate words. But images of him standing at his deceased fiancée’s grave hit her, so she moved swiftly through the doorway.

Carter followed, closing the door behind him. As they moved up the passageway, Gianna searched for something to return them to the happy-go-lucky mood of a few minutes earlier. Then she remembered—she’d glimpsed a keyboard in one of the rooms when they rushed by during the tour earlier. The keyboard came to the rescue when she spotted it again through the crack of the door.

She stopped abruptly. “Is that a keyboard?” she asked, pointing towards the door.
