As soon as we walk out the door, Mason loops his arm around my waist and pulls me close to his side. I unconsciously let myself melt against him, enjoying the feeling of his strong arm around me. When I realize what I’m doing, I tense and try to move away.

“Don’t,” he murmurs, looking down at me. “Just let yourself feel. I promise I’ll protect you.”

It’s not in my nature to believe people easily. Even if I didn’t have the romantic background that I do, I work on the police force, and that can make you cynical pretty quickly. But when Mason tells me he’ll protect me, I know he’s being honest.

It’s been so long since I’ve been able to let my guard down.

I take a deep breath and tell myself to trust.

“It looks like you just had an entire conversation in your head,” Mason says. I look up to find him grinning at me. It makes him look younger, almost boyish—no longer the serious forensic psychiatrist that I originally met.

“I spend a lot of time in my head,” I reply.

“I can identify with that.”

“What made you decide to be a psychiatrist?” I ask.

His hand strays over the swell of my hip, and it distracts me so much I’ve honestly forgotten that I asked him a question by the time he answers.

“I heard it was a good way to meet girls,” he finally says, giving me another smile.

“Smartass.”

“No, really. My roommate in college told me that there are usually a lot of girls in Intro to Psych, so I added it to my schedule. It turns out I was actually really interested in the field.”

“Did you meet girls?”

He shrugs noncommittally. “I didn’t find the right one,” he says.

“Yeah, I know that feeling.”

“I’ve got a pretty good feeling about my chances lately, though,” he says. “I met this woman at work. She’s incredible—smart, gorgeous, and funny.”

“And you asked me out instead?”

He stops me. “I know you do that when you’re uncomfortable. And you don’t need to feel that way around me. If you don’t know how amazing you are, I’m happy to tell you.”

My cheeks are warm as he leans in to kiss me, his lips pressing against mine sweetly. He cups my face with his hand, and I’m lost. I part my lips and he presses his tongue into my mouth, still so gentle, as if I’m something precious.

“We have to stop until we get home,” he says, breaking away. “Otherwise, I’m going to have some difficulty walking.”

“Well, we better hurry up, then,” I say with uncharacteristic confidence.

“Lead the way.”
