MYSTERY BOYFRIEND—LEO

After a long day of solving murders, Parker and I got back to work on Shay’s case. Starting with a meeting with the missing woman’s sister.

When we arrived at Amanda’s house in the suburbs, she was grateful we had taken an interest in her sister’s disappearance six months ago—just before Nicoletta’s fatal accident.

“I swear to you, something happened to Shay. She would never stay away this long.”

Parker and I joined Amanda at her kitchen table and took notes as she recalled the last time she had seen her sister and where she had been the day of her disappearance.

“Was Shay involved with anyone romantically?” Parker asked.

“I think so, but she got mad at me when I asked her about it. She had come home in the middle of the night a few times. I asked her where she’d been and what she was doing, but she never answered. I just wanted to talk, but she thought I was accusing her of using drugs again.”

Amanda wiped her nose on a tissue. “Shay was angry because she thought I didn’t trust her. That’s why we weren’t on speaking terms when she disappeared. When she hadn’t come home for a few days, I figured she was staying with someone to cool off, but she never came back.”

“Can you think of anyone who would want to harm her? Jealous exes? People she owed money to? Drug dealers?”

Amanda’s lip quivered at the mention of drugs. “The other cops think Shay was some junkie who ran off when she needed a fix, but I’m telling you, she was clean. She paid her share of the rent on time. She got up every single day, made coffee and breakfast for the both of us, then went to work.”

“It sounds like Shay was on the right track with her recovery. You are a great sister for supporting her.” Parker was the kindest person I had ever met. For a guy with a soft heart like his, he had chosen a career that revolved around tragedy.

I had feelings too, but I never let them show on the job. I took an all-business approach to solving cases. “Where did she work?”

“Shay was a freelance bookkeeper. She had a couple of accounts that kept her busy.”

“Can you give us the names of her clients?”

Amanda shrugged. “I don’t know who they are. She worked on a laptop she had with her on the day she disappeared. It’s gone, along with her purse.”

Parker stared at the ceiling as he considered his next question. “Could you show us her bedroom? Maybe she has some work files or a pay stub that might help us figure out who she worked for.”

She gave him a hopeful smile. “Of course. She stayed in the guest bedroom. You guys are a lot smarter than the other two suits they sent over.”

Once the homeowner permitted us to search her home, Parker and I found several boxes of work folders and papers stashed in Shay’s closet. There was too much information to sort through in an evening, so Amanda allowed us to take it with us.
