“Is that him?” Prue asked, peering over my shoulder to look at my phone screen.

“Sure is.” Holding the phone so my best friend could see the text message Luca just sent me.

“He just arrived at his motel and is heading straight to the job site.”

Prue smirked at me as she reached for her glass of frosty cold beer. “Look at you, using your shy voice, blushing and shit,” she teased me.

“I like him a lot.” I was hugely aware that Luca made me more girlie than I was comfortable with or had ever been. Girlie as in, gushing, blushing, out of control heart rate, that kind of girlie.

“Have you got a photo of him?”

“Shit! No, I can’t believe that I haven’t.” Swiping my phone open to Luca’s message page, I quickly type out a request for a selfie from him.

“I can’t wait to meet him,” Prue said, sipping her beer. “It sucks that I live forty minutes away now. Seeing you once a week for pole dancing, then back to Melton until the weekend isn’t right. And I missed seeing you fall on your tushie for ‘the one’. Dramatically mimicking air quotes, making me giggle.

I called my bestie and cried. An hour and a half later, Prue stormed into my shop and demanded I close and let her take me to the pub for drinks.

“How did you manage to get time off work today?”

“Told them that I had an emergency back home that couldn’t wait. And Meadow Tessler sobbing about her boyfriend leaving her for twenty-four hours seemed like one to me.” Giving me side-eyes, Prue raised her brow at me, silently asking me to refute her claim. Of course, I couldn’t because she was correct. I rang her, sobbed, then begged her to come and give me a hug. I was unrepentant in my sorrow.

“Don’t be such a—” just at that moment, my phone dinged with a message alert.

“He texted back!” I squealed, fumbling with the device, finally swiping open the screen without looking at it because I didn’t want to see if he did what I’d asked until I’d actually opened his message. Call it crazy, call it the actions of a woman on the cusp of needing therapy, I don’t care. I’d rather not look and let the excitement build before opening it, and I have been doing this ever since I gave Luca my number. I even went as far
