Egypt . . .

Jamal was just hitting the block when he saw Egypt running down the street in her pajama pants and tank top, screaming and crying. He was on the opposite side of the street, and there was some traffic, being it was the first of the month, so he couldn’t get to her by doing an illegal turn. Jamal turned the first corner and made a U-turn to go back around to the other side of the street where he’d seen E running, but the light going north and south had changed, and traffic was flowing.

“Fuck!” he said, jumping out the car and yelling her name. He didn’t even think twice about what could happen by him leaving his new Mustang in the middle of a Watts street nor how one of the cars could have hit him by taking off into ongoing traffic as he had. After dodging and weaving cars, being cursed out by drivers and horns being blown at him, Jamal made it on the other side of the street safely. He was just in time to see Egypt hit the corner that led into an alley.

“Egypt, come here!” he yelled, running after her.

Egypt looked behind her and saw him coming her way. He really felt sorry for her.

“Leave me alone!” she cried, picking up her pace.

Jamal was a street nigga and running was something he did often—whether it was to dodge a bullet or run from the police—so it was nothing for him to pick up a little speed and catch her within seconds.

“Come here. What’s wrong?” He grabbed her by the arm, pulling her to face him.

“Stop! Let go! I’m sick of everybody. Just let me go. I just want to go to my aunt’s house,” she said, referring to Olivia.

“I’ll take you, but what’s wrong?” he asked her.

Through tears, she cried and told him how she was sick of people trying to make her father out to be the bad person. She told him what Kisser had said and looked into his eyes, waiting on his response. She wanted him to tell her it was a lie and not to believe it, but the way he looked at her, she knew he must have believed it, too.

“Let me take you to your aunt’s house.” He spoke just above a whisper.

“Don’t tell me you believe that shit, too? Oh my God!” She stomped her feet and tried to pull away from him.

“No, come here. Come on; let’s go. My car’s over there in the middle of the street.”

Jamal grabbed her by the hand and began to lead her toward where he’d left his car. Egypt stomped and cried all the way.

Meanwhile, across the street, near Jamal’s car, Betho and Tyus were going at it. Tyus had seen Jamal’s car in the middle of the street when he was leaving Maria’s house; they had just had a heated argument. She was tripping on him for not being there when she’d needed him. The drama her mother had gotten herself into had her stressing.
