Chapter 13

Drake dreamt of Helena’s honey-sweet kisses for eons. Her taste was now bitter. Even after their conversion, her kisses were all he lived for.

It took all his control not to spit her essence from his mouth. Such an action would be the ultimate insult. Helena and the creatures she nurtured had saved their lives.

Helena frowned. “You are no longer a vampire. How is that possible?”

“I found my soul mate and she transformed me. We are now elementals,” Drake replied.

He turned and stared into empty space. Star was no longer beside him. Only smoked-filled air lingered. The kiss must have scared her off. Her jealousy over Shirl and the magnitude of women in his past must have reemerged after he kissed his wife. Drake cursed to himself. He needed to stop thinking of Helena by that title.

“Soul mate? The child from the Troyk universe? She has barely lived one life. What could the two of you possibly have in common? Tell me something I will believe.” After all this time, Helena had not lost her sarcastic tone when she was not pleased.

There could still be blood-crazed vampires roaming the woods. Star was ill equipped to protect herself. At least the two shifters were with his mate. He needed to divorce himself of his former wife’s company and find his soul mate.

“There is a mountain range to the east,” Drake explained. “A horde of vampires destroyed the once hidden passage. Meet me at the trailhead three days from now at sunset. Do not enter until I meet you there.”

Her nose wrinkled with displeasure. “And if I enter before that time?”

“Wolf and jaguar shifters populate the mountains and protect the humans who dwell in the valley. I do not want any of the shifters harmed. My blood brother Sammuel will have to negotiate your entry onto their lands. Vampires are not welcome. They are considered prey to destroy.”

“The Creator made others like us?” Her voice was laced with excitement. She must have lived a lonely existence since their separation.

“Four others,” Drake replied. “They have all transformed upon meeting their soul mates. Until last night, I was still a vampire.”

“All of them?” Helena asked in wonder.

“There are two more vampires who have not found their mates,” Drake replied. “Patrice is the daughter of one of my brothers. She was exiled to another dimension. The second was created by a vampire no longer living. His name is Batiste.”

Helena had a strange look on her face. “How did she get to the other realm?”

“A crystal telepath from the Troyk universe opened a portal from within Sammuel’s fortress,” Drake replied.

Her eyes brightened. “Then there is hope this miserable existence can end.”

Drake did not want to give her false promises. Only The Creator would know if a soul mate existed for her. So much time had passed. Her soul mate may have been born and died.

His anxiety grew the longer he did not chase after Star. It was time to leave.

“Sunset three days from now,” he once again instructed Helena.
