Chapter Sixteen

Brazen sat at one of the outside tables at the Dragon’s Nest—a restaurant on the river on the border of the estate’s property—with Daven, Kian, and Bala. They were to go over the security software for the new hospital. Daven and Bala had tested the system last week. Neither could breach it.

Bala was Arden’s nephew and half dragon, half wolf. He was also on house arrest of sorts because he tried to kill Daven. Bala believed Daven was responsible for the deaths of Bala’s family and the entire wolf village. He learned that it was all lies his uncle fed him, using Daven’s memory loss of the events.

Once captured, Bala agreed to go through treatments for an illness that ran in Bala’s family and work with Daven and the enforcers to take down Arden once and for all.

“You should send Ryse and Reagan in,” Bala suggested.

“I can send Ryse to test it, but Reagan helped build the system, so she’d get in even if I changed all the codes.” As if hearing her name, Reagan glanced at him from two tables over.

She and the other females were wrapping up the final preps for the festival. But by the way they laughed and giggled, he guessed they were done. He even heard bits of baby names being mentioned. Gianna and Vanessa were pregnant and drew too much attention from the other males. It was natural for others to be curious because it gave them hope for a future.

It still didn’t stop Kian’s growls when one walked by and stared at Vanessa and Gianna since Azar nor Voss were there.

Daven sat back in his chair and stared at Bala. The two of them were working on being friends. That was if Daven had friends. Although since he mated with Katrina, the male had relaxed a lot.

A few months back, Bala was under the influence of his uncle Arden. Bala believed Daven killed Bala’s pack and his family. When the truth came out, it was Bala’s father and Arden’s twin brother who slaughtered the den and the dragon village nearby. There was a sickness that ran through Bala’s family that caused the males to go rogue. He was currently under Madden’s care. The healer was hoping to find a cure for the disease.

Daven tapped his finger on the table. “How is treatment going?”

Bala glanced from him to Brazen and then Kian. “Okay, I think. I mean the aggression is calmer. My dragon and wolf aren’t fighting me as much.”

That was another thing. Bala’s mother was a dragon shifter, a secret Bala guarded most his life, until recently. His dad made him suppress his dragon half, which could’ve been one reason Bala was going crazy.

Daven nodded and glanced to the table where the females were. “Have any news on Arden?”

“I think he knows I report back to you. He doesn’t talk about anything important while I’m around.” Bala paused to take a drink of his cava. “That just means I have to do some digging and spying.
