Chapter Nineteen

Justus

I pulled at my collar again, feeling decidedly uncomfortable in my own skin. All the other guys looked relaxed and chatted easily. An invisible force had my stomach clenched in a massive fist. I could barely breathe.

Celeste terrified me. I didn’t do relationships, I never had. I wanted it to be as easy as it was when she was a hellhound. Now she was real, the dynamics had changed, and I had no idea what to do with that shit. When she was covered with black hair, there was no possibility of me messing anything up or saying the wrong thing.

Because there was never any chance of this being tangible.

Words were evil. They evolved in your head and came out twisted up and not as intended.

She’d died for me. No one had even cared enough about me before to even know I was locked up in the dungeons of the underrealm. How did you deal with that fact?

I wasn’t worthy of that sacrifice.

I lifted the glass of whiskey Darius had poured earlier and threw it down my throat. It wouldn’t get me drunk, nothing but underrealm moonshine ever did, but it would take the edge of my nerves.

Darius refilled my glass without question, and I tossed it back. His eyebrows lifted but he said nothing. He had known me most of my life, knew nothing had ever been easy for me when it came to relationships. You didn’t form strong ties with people when you were locked up between missions for months or years on end.

I ran a shaky hand through my hair. Hell, I never formed proper relationships before I was turned into the council’s pet assassin. Silver dragons were notorious for being loners. My father proved that when he decided to walk the earth alone after my mother was taken, not even having a child was enough to keep him at home. He only returned once or twice a year until he stopped appearing altogether.

I could kill a man a thousand different ways, and I’d faced the scariest monsters ever created. Every experience of my life paled in comparison to Celeste.

She terrified me.

The feel of her soft skin tormented my every waking moment. The taste of her mouth haunted me. The scent of her hair seemed to permeate the air I tried to breathe and torture me with everything I couldn’t have. I’d been unable to stay in a room with her in case I jumped on her and sunk my fangs in.

If I gave in to these strange emotions that demanded I claim her, it would be her ruin. My bloodline was cursed, and I refused to condemn Celeste because I couldn’t control my desires.

I drunk another glass of whiskey, the fire in the liquid burning a trail down my throat into my stomach.

“Are we ready to go?” Elfie bounced into the room, her smile stretched from one side of her face to the other. Excitement oozed out of her to infect the room.

I wasn’t ready.
