“Hey! Come on in!” Pax held the back door to Chris’s place open to let August in, and he smiled at the dragon. “I wasn’t sure if you were going to make it. We were just about to start without you.”

“That would’ve been fine.” August brought a six-pack of IPAs to contribute for the night, and he put it in the fridge. “I wouldn’t have expected you to wait for me.”

“Oh, come on! It wouldn’t be the same without you. Besides, all the ladies are out. It’s not often that we can get the whole clan den to ourselves,” Evan added.

“You’re just saying that because you can’t get a woman.” Dean grinned as he took a seat at the table.

“Oh, I can get a woman,” Evan argued, crossing his arms across his chest and tilting back in his chair. “I just haven’t found the woman. The rest of you didn’t settle, and I’m not about to, either.”

“I’m sure she’s right around the corner,” Tyler agreed. He fluttered his eyelashes and held his hands against his cheek as he continued in a high-pitched voice. “I just can’t wait for some handsome bear mechanic with the right tool for the job to come along and sweep me off my feet!”

“Okay, who’s dealing?” Hugh asked as he cracked open a beer. He glanced at his boss, an inquisitive look in his eyes, but he didn’t say anything.

That was just as well. August sat at the table, ready to leave the rest of the world behind him for the moment.

Chris grabbed the deck of cards from the center of the table and began shuffling them. “I’ll start, but there’s something we have to deal with first.”

The other men went silent as they waited for their Alpha to continue.

The deep slate of Chris’s eyes slid up from the felt on the table and stared right at August. “I’d like to know a little more about what happened with that other dragon who showed up. I don’t like to put you on the spot, but I figured talking about it here was probably easier than holding an emergency meeting.”

“I don’t think it would justify something so extreme, anyway,” August replied. His voice sounded calm, no different than it usually did, but he was tense, and he could feel the eyes and ears of everyone else in the room on him.

Chris rifled the cards, his hands easily squaring the deck again. “No? We’re talking about someone we’ve never
